IE7 drops WGA due to lack of interest

Microsoft dropped the WGA (windows genuine advantage) requirement for Internet Explorer 7 because the uptake on the browser has been so low, considering it is a critical update, not something that can just be ignored.
It’s probably because there’s another hoop to go through, or that Microsoft are so anal about people pirating their operating system. [...]

iPhone 1.1.1 gets hacked

A rough jailbreak of sorts has come about for the 1.1.1 firmware update on iPhone, luckily. Third party apps may make their way to the iPhones that are released in Europe on the 9th of November.
Third party apps aren’t working as of yet, because of added and changed frameworks inside the micro OS X architecture inside the update. The [...]

Apple confirms ZFS for Leopard

Apple today announced that it would step up and use the ZFS file system and make it compatible with OS X as of Leopard. The good news is twofold here, it means OS X’s filesystem is no longer Apple only and open source and it also means that Time Machine may use ZFS to work, [...]

Joost goes public

Joost got unlocked to the public today, just a day after the upgrade to a beta of its 1.0. Looks like I’ll be getting less email from people asking for an invite, but it’s good to see it open :]

Adium, now at 1.1.3

Adium hit 1.1.3 tonight, with a few new features and a good bunch of needed bugfixes. The new features are better support for jabber (which was added into libpurple, helping pidgin and finch) and support for the ever popular Myspace IM service </sarcasm>
The bugfixes are more numerous, with improvements over pretty much every area of [...]

How to get productive with quicksilver

Quicksilver is easily the best reason to move to the Mac, although it’s widely adopted among users, so many of them don’t have a clue how deep the app really goes. This post is all about the things you can do with quicksilver, that nobody uses.

Inquisitor

Inquisitor: one of my favorite safari plugins got a new version today, up to 3.0 v47, it’s developed by the same guy that makes Newsfire and Xtorrent: David Watanabe
Download it, i highly recommend it, it gives pretty much instant auto completes and works brilliantly even if you’re looking for something obscure.

Microsoft pushes stealth Windows Update

Microsoft just fell into a lot of hot water over patching systems, even if updates are turned off. They patched some files in the automatic update application, but didn’t ask any users if they wanted to. I see why they did it, but they really should have asked to install new software
If they can do [...]

iPhone hackers create open source unlock: Everyone saw it coming.

Just a day after the iPhone sim unlock folks released their $99 iPhone unlock, the open source community has pretty much done the same thing, for free.
Open source strikes back. AT&T must hate them.

You should all download firefox or your (windows) computer will die!

Kristian Freeman’s latest post about Firefox goes through a lot of the reasons to switch to it, especially on windows.
I’ve found it’s rather craptacular after 2.0 on a mac, slow and sluggish with lots of tabs open, although the engine is good in Camino.
