02.25The Government in the UK does not understand P2P

Seeing as the Labour government of the UK are seeking to push through laws requiring ISPs to shape the packets of anyone on their network, irrespective of what they’re doing over p2p, I feel I have the right to say they’re idiots. P2P and bittorrent in particular is needed in so many applications (skype, joost, linux distribution and as a means to ship patches for games) that it is impossible to check what is going through each and every single packet efficiently, making it more likely that the ISP will just block torrent traffic all together.
If no agreement is reached, “the government will equip itself to introduce legislation swiftly if suitable arrangements between ISPs and relevant sectors are not forthcoming or prove insufficient,” the report said.
